NEW YORK (AP) – A New York City nanny charged with stabbing two small children to death has appeared in court on the anniversary of their killings.
Yoselyn (YOH’-sih-lihn) Ortega appeared briefly in Manhattan court on Friday. Defense attorneys and prosecutors discussed handing over evidence. The hearing was adjourned until November.
Police say Ortega killed 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim on Oct. 25, 2012, in a bathroom while their mother was out picking up her third child from a swimming lesson. They say Ortega cut her throat in a failed suicide attempt.
Ortega is from the Dominican Republic. She has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
Defense lawyer Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg says Ortega’s delusions and injuries mean she can’t understand the case.
A state Supreme Court justice found Ortega fit for trial.
