Group forms to fight corruption on reservations

HAVRE, Mont. (AP) – Tribal members from several Montana Indian reservations say they’re creating a group to fight corruption.
The Havre Daily News reports (
http://bit.ly/18VhosB) representatives from five Montana reservations met Wednesday night in Havre. Most are dissident groups that are fighting tribal power structures on their reservations.
They included representatives from the Rocky Boy’s, Fort Belknap, Blackfeet, Crow and Flathead reservations. Organizers say there also is interest from Fort Peck and Northern Cheyenne representatives.
They say corruption and civil-rights violations are two of the biggest problems facing Montana Indians. They also criticized the U.S. government for not doing enough to curb corruption.
Participants discussed ideas such as taking their grievances to a U.S. Senate panel on Indian affairs.
The group says it plans to meet again to lay out its plans.
