PHOENIX — Police say a homicide suspect wanted by the FBI barricaded himself in a west Phoenix apartment for hours Wednesday before he died of an apparent gunshot wound.

The suspect, Jason Earl Armstrong, 26, was wanted in connection with the July 1 murder of his wife, soldier Iris Armstrong, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, an Army base.

Phoenix police said officers responded to the area of 35th Avenue and Indian School Road to assist the FBI about 3:30 p.m. after Armstrong was spotted and ran from law enforcement into the apartment.

Members of the Phoenix Police Special Assignments Unit had negotiated with Armstrong for hours.

Armstrong has been on the run since the murder. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest July 8. At the time, the FBI said Armstrong has ties to Arizona, California, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Texas.

The federal agency had been offering a reward of up $5,000 for information that led to Armstrong’s arrest.

His wife was an 82nd Airborne Division soldier who had joined the army in October 2012.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
