PHOENIX — Some heat relief is expected to arrive in the form of monsoon storms later this week, the National Weather Service said.

“We’re looking at some increased monsoon moisture moving into our area beginning Friday,” James Sawtelle with the weather service said.

Phoenix has seen another brutal stretch of summer heat and is fresh off of yet another excessive heat warning that saw highs a little too close to 120 degrees for comfort. Lows were in the 90s.

After the expected storms, temperatures should drop nearly 10 degrees.

The weather service’s forecast calls for a high of 110 on Friday but a drop to just 103 for both Saturday and Sunday. Lows will be in the mid-80s.

Despite the expected return of the monsoon storms, the best chance of rain is only 30 percent. That stretches from Saturday morning through Sunday evening.

The slightly cooler temperatures are expected to continue well into next week. Both Monday and Tuesday will be about 102, while Wednesday should be about 103.

Sawtelle said, though a break in the extreme heat is coming, Phoenicians still need to be cautious when it comes to being outdoors.

“Schedule your outdoor activities and your yard work and your chores for early morning,” he said. “Try to avoid midday heat.”
