LISTEN: Jeff DeWit's new appointment to the Trump campaign.

PHOENIX — Arizona State Treasurer Jeff DeWit has been named chief operating officer of the Donald Trump campaign.

News leaked early Wednesday before the campaign made an official announcement.

DeWit has been active in his support of Trump’s GOP presidential candidacy, heading up the state’s campaign for the nominee. He had no plans to step down from his elected position.

“I will absolutely make sure that I’m taking care of all my responsibilities because my first priority is to protect taxpayers in Arizona,” he told KTAR 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News.

The high-profile title comes without a salary — DeWit is a volunteer.

DeWit, who has a background in business, took office in 2014. He will manage administrative and organizational operations for the campaign.

“I’ve known him since before he ran for president and always, always admired him,” DeWit said of Trump, “so that’s why I was the first elected official in the country to endorse him and why I’m so proud to do everything I can to help him win now.”

Trump said in a statement, “I have known and worked with Jeff for a long time and he is an outstanding leader and individual who will make it possible to for us together to win this election and Make America Great Again.”

Arizona Rep. Phil Lovas will take over for DeWit with the campaign at the state level.

We want to hear from you.
