CLEVELAND — Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump tends to do what he wants and that may include making an early appearance at the party’s convention in Cleveland on Monday night.
Politico, citing a Fox News interview, said Trump may attend the first night of the convention to hear his wife, Melania, speak. The New York billionaire was coy when asked if he planned to speak, but said he will likely be in attendance.
“I just don’t want to say it, so I’ll keep it quiet, just among us, I’ll be there. I want to watch. It will be very exciting.”
If Trump does speak Monday, it would be a surprise. Traditionally, the presumptive nominee does not speak until the last night of the convention, which is Thursday.
Trump had previously said he had been asked to speak each night of the gathering, but turned that down.
Each night of the convention has a different theme. Monday’s is “Make America Safe Again” and scheduled speakers, apart from Melania Trump, include Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (retired), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Jason Beardsley and U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.).
