PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) – Florida’s Panhandle has a new underwater attraction for divers _ a sunken 175-foot barge adorned with stainless steel sculptures and memorial plaques.
The barge was sunk Wednesday in about 50 feet of water, 1.7 miles off Pensacola Beach.
It was donated to the community by the owner of a local ship building company who worked with an area artist to come up with an idea for the art barge.
Artwork on the barge includes renderings of the iconic “Welcome to Pensacola” sign, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels fighter jets, the famous FloraBama bar on the Florida/Alabama state line and other pieces that pay tribute to the region.
