Police: Texas teen fabricated abduction report

Jul 22, 2013, 5:41 PM

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) – A 15-year-old girl fabricated a story claiming three men abducted and held her captive in a West Texas home, although at least one of the men could be facing sexual assault charges in the case, police said Monday.

Lubbock Police Sgt. Jason Lewis said the girl likely was involved in prostitution and that she was not held against her will at the house in the city.

He did not know if all three men would be charged with sexual assault.

“We do have suspects,” Lewis said. “We do know who they are. The charges are coming.”

The girl ran away from home in Amarillo in mid-May and came to Lubbock a week or two later.

She had told officers she was abducted from Amarillo about two months ago and held at the home. She said she crawled out a window at the home on Friday and fled to a McDonald’s restaurant where she called police.

Detectives took additional statements from the girl and determined that her claims of sexual assault were credible, but they did not believe she had been abducted and held captive, Lewis said.

The girl also had told investigators that a second girl had been held at the house.

“As far as we know, there’s no second girl,” Lewis said. “She’s it.”

It was not clear Monday whether a missing persons report had been filed on the teen who has been returned to her home in Amarillo, Lewis said.

Three men at the house were detained for questioning Saturday and one may be in custody because he had an outstanding warrant, he said.

A SWAT team was sent to the house Saturday because the girl told police the men might be armed, police said.
