Phoenix activists plan another police-shootings protest for this week

PHOENIX — At a town hall meeting Tuesday night in downtown Phoenix, around 100 activists gathered to plan another civil rights protest for this week, exactly seven days after a similar march.
“We will get started on a protest midday Friday,” said protest organizer Rev. Jarrett Maupin. “On 24th Street and Camelback (Road). The plan is to close the intersection, north, south, east and west.”
Maupin said the protest will address police brutality and racism.
“We hope that by obstructing traffic there, we can draw attention to our cause and our 12 reasonable points that we’re asking the city to work with us on,” he said.
Those 12 points include things like body cameras, diverse hiring, diversity training and the city budget, which Maupin said, are designed to help change the relationship between the Phoenix police and communities of color.
“Again, we are coming out in peace and Friday will peaceful,” he said. “It will be inconvenient, but it will be peaceful.”
Last Friday, as many as 1,000 marchers in downtown Phoenix demonstrated against the recent fatal shootings of black men by police. Three people were arrested.
