HOUSTON (AP) – Houston’s fire chief says the four firefighters who died fighting a motel fire were looking for people they thought were still trapped in the burning building.
At a news conference, Terry Garrison said the firefighters “took the highest amount of risk possible” because they thought there were “civilians in the structure” when the roof collapsed. He said the firefighters “who were trying to save lives were lost.”
Garrison says everyone inside the building has since been accounted for.
Mayor Annise Parker says that of five other firefighters injured, one was in critical condition in an intensive care burn unit.
