PHOENIX — A majority of Arizonans taking a summer vacation are opting for the affordable by taking in-state trips or short jaunts to California, a survey said.

“We are a very hot state when it comes to the summertime,” Mike Noble, managing partner and chief pollster of OH Predictive Insights, said of the survey’s findings. “Northern Arizona seems like a quick getaway to get out and (also) California. Who can say no to the ocean and the cooler temperatures?”

Despite being so close to the affordability of Mexico, not many Arizonans head south of the border for a break.

“I think that some of the instability that they have over there, with the violence and the drug cartels, may be deterring folks away from travelling to Mexico,” Noble said.

More than 30 percent of Arizonans surveyed said they have never traveled out of the country.

About 53 percent of Arizonans hop in the car when it comes time for vacation, while 39 percent travel by air.

Though most only leave for an average of four days, they’re still spending what most would consider a tidy sum.

“The majority of the folks spend $2,500 on their traveling,” Mike Noble said.

That number likely stems from the number of people going on vacation. The survey found 46 percent of Arizonans are going away with family, while 18 percent said they are getting out for an adventure and 13 percent are having fun with friends.
