HONOLULU (AP) – Rescue crews have stopped searching for a British man who fell overboard from a troubled sailboat in the Pacific Ocean.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the search for Luke Stimson was suspended Tuesday, pending any new developments. The Coast Guard previously said the man’s last name is Stinson, but that was incorrect.
Over three days, the Coast Guard and the Navy spent 50 hours searching more than 2,300 square miles about 600 miles west of Midway Atoll.
United Kingdom officials reported to the Coast Guard in Hawaii on Saturday night that the 38-year-old fell from the sailboat. He was wearing a yellow lifejacket and was conscious when he fell into the water.
A woman named Laura Vernon was later rescued from the sailboat. She didn’t have enough experience to sail alone.
