The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) announced Thursday that troopers have responded to more than 840 calls for wrong-way drivers in 2016.
That’s over 140 calls a month, and close to about five calls for wrong-way drivers a day.
Of those 840 calls received, 14 of the wrong-way drivers were involved in serious injury or fatal collisions, and 51 were arrested for suspected impairment.
In the last two weeks alone, two troopers have been injured trying to stop those wrong-way drivers.
The AZDPS said that though each call doesn’t lead to their actually being a wrong-way driver, their troopers always respond right away and treat each call seriously.
The Department of Public Safety wants to remind motorists to avoid distractions while driving, and always have a plan in mind of what to do in emergency situations.
