Guinea-Bissau armed forces chief charged in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) – The armed forces chief of the small West African nation of Guinea-Bissau has been charged in New York in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine and aid a foreign terrorist organization.
Federal authorities on Thursday announced the indictment of Antonio Indjai (ihn-JY’).
They say a sting operation carried out by U.S. drug enforcement agents resulted in the charges.
Indjai has been subject to a United Nations travel ban since authorities say he participated in an April 2012 coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau.
The indictment was unsealed two weeks after a former navy chief of Guinea-Bissau was brought to New York for trial following his arrest at sea by federal drug agents.
Four others charged in the conspiracy were brought to the U.S. for trial at the same time.
Indjai isn’t in custody.
