Gov’t: 4 NY area airports have training violations

NEW YORK (AP) – The federal government has cracked down on four New York City area airports for what it calls “egregious” violations of safety and rescue regulations involving more than 250 police officers.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and Teterboro (TEE’-tur-bur-oh) airports. It confirmed Monday it was fined more than $3 million for violations going back to 2010.
Spokeswoman Lisa MacSpadden says the Port Authority officers linked to the violations attended recertification sessions. But she says some of the paperwork proving it was lost or incomplete.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says violations won’t be tolerated.
The Port Authority is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to rectify the lapses.
The Port Authority Police Benevolent Association says its officers provide the safest and most efficient response to emergencies.
