Metro Atlanta school system no longer on probation

Jan 21, 2014, 4:25 PM

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) – Georgia’s third-largest school district has been moved off probation for its accreditation, after a tumultuous few years that included the rare step of the governor removing a majority of the local school board.

Officials with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools made the announcement Tuesday during a packed school board meeting in DeKalb County. The metro Atlanta school district serves nearly 100,000 students.

The district remains on warning but no longer faces the imminent threat of loss of its accreditation. A packed crowd stood and applauded once the announcement was made.

The accrediting association put the district on probation in December 2012, citing problems with board governance and fiscal mismanagement. A loss of accreditation could have affected students’ ability to gain college admission and financial aid.
