PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation has been given the go-ahead for hundreds of road improvement projects now that the State Transportation Board has approved a five-year construction program.

That means a number of Arizona roads will be getting face-lifts.

For example, projects along Interstate 10 will result in the stretch between Casa Grande to Tucson becoming six lanes instead of four.

“What we’re really focused on is those major expansion projects that will move forward along corridors like I-10, U.S. 93, State Route 189,” said ADOT spokesperson Laura Douglas.

The State Transportation Board voted last week to adopt the agency’s 2017-2021 Five-Year-Transportation Facilities Construction Program.  The projects that will receive funding are in Greater Arizona, the Maricopa County region, and the Pima County region.

Douglas said the five-year program really focuses on both large and small road projects.

“Those projects translate into better trade, commerce, and economic development, as well as mobility,” Douglas said.

The funds for the road improvements will come from federal, state and local dollars.  The total price tag for the five-year program is more than $5 billion.
