Arizona State University’s Ditch the Dumpster move-out event collected over 105,000 pounds of reusable or recyclable items this past spring, as students left the dorms and began their summer vacations.

The event allows students to either donate or recycle unwanted items instead of throwing them away. This year, students recycled 57,000 pounds of materials and another 48,000 pounds of clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and toiletries were donated to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arizona, Epic Thrift and Goodwill of Central Arizona.

“Year after year, students make a difference in someone else’s life by donating items to community members in need,” said Katie Schumacher, ASU Zero Waste senior program coordinator in a press release. “We look forward to fall move-in, when students have yet another opportunity to support the local community and divert waste.”

The move-out efforts began on April 22 and concluded May 8. Students were able to drop off items at donation and collection bins throughout the residence halls. The college also has a similar event each fall for move-in where students are asked to again, “Ditch the Dumpster,” by recycling cardboard, Styrofoam and other packing materials. .
