For parents looking for a way to get the kids out of the house for the long hot summer … think about camping or fishing.
“It’s an amazing bonding experience that you can have with your kids,” said Mike Russell KTAR’s Get Outdoors . “Because it’s one-on-one time and you’re surrounded by nature.”
But what about parents that don’t have any gear for camping and fishing?
“When it comes to equipment, your neighbors probably do, your friends probably do … borrowing equipment is perfectly okay,” he said.
There is no need to go to an outdoor store and spend 100’s of dollars for your first try.
The next thing parents may struggle with is where to go.
“Our state parks are so amazing for little camping areas,” Russell said. “You can just do a quick overnight, just a tent and some firewood and some stuff for s’mores … maybe hotdogs.”
Make it easy, give it a try one time, trust me you’ll be hooked, he said.
And as for fishing.
“Most of the parks in the area have fishing programs,” he said. “And if you need to get your kid a license to go fishing, it’s $5 for the entire year.”
