PHOENIX — Good news, Arizona drivers: The Arizona Department of Transportation has no planned construction closures along state highways over Memorial Day weekend.
Instead, ADOT, along with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, will work to reduce speeding, drunk driving, and lack of seat belt use in three specific high-traffic areas: Interstate 17, Interstate 10 and State Route 87.
The three highways are heavily used over holiday weekends as Arizonans head either west to California or north to the Flagstaff area.
In addition, state and local agencies will place crews along busy highways in order to cut down on delays caused by crashes or other factors.
Although there will not be any scheduled closures over Memorial Day weekend, drivers should be aware of existing road work restrictions, specifically along I-10 in Benson and I-40.
For those traveling to Sedona, officials suggest taking State Route 260 and US 89A to avoid expected heavy traffic on I-17 and State Route 179.
Drivers should also be aware of smoke drifting into the roads from fires up north which could cause delays.
ADOT encouraged drivers to always be prepared for unexpected accidents. Officials suggested packing extra snacks and water, avoiding high-traffic times when possible, getting plenty of sleep before driving and ensuring passengers are buckled up.
