PHOENIX — Nestle announced Friday that it would open a $35 million water bottling plant in the Phoenix area.

The food giant said in a release that it has leased a 395,000-square-foot, LEED-certified warehouse near 43rd Avenue and Buckeye Road  so it can have quick access to Interstate 10. It plans to open the doors in spring 2017.

The company plans to hire between 40 and 50 people to staff the facility. However, as production is increased over the next several years, it could employ as many as 100.

Nestle said it decided to expand its operations to Phoenix because of high demand for its Pure Life purified water.

“Establishing a Phoenix facility reduces transportation miles for distribution from facilities in other parts of the western region and allows for faster, localized and more efficient service to our customers and consumers,” the company said in the release.

Nestle said it has been interested in opening such a plant in the Phoenix area for at least 10 years.

The company will purchase city of Phoenix water at the standard rate to produce its product.
