Arizona State University reports more Hispanics obtaining degrees

PHOENIX — Arizona State University said while Hispanics make up the largest percentage of the state’s K-12 population, they have the lowest post-secondary degree completion rates.
But Vice President of Educational Outreach Beatriz Rendon said educators at the university are working to change that fact.
“Hispanics are the largest growing population, and it’s certainly something that we’re trying to advance relative to educational attainment,” she said.
Rendon said there are some encouraging signs that things could be changing, since Arizona State University is seeing more Hispanics get their degrees.
“In the past 10 years, we’ve increased the number of degrees awarded to Latinos by more than 100 percent,” Rendon said.
In the Spring 2016 semester alone, more than 2,000 Hispanic students graduated from the university.
Hispanics are also obtaining degrees in a multitude of subjects. Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Business are the top three subjects at the university that Hispanics are getting degrees in, Rendon said.
The increased number of students gaining degrees demonstrates a positive outlook for the general workforce: it’s estimated that by the year 2020, 68 percent of all jobs will require some form of post-secondary education.
