A fire that started in Mexico and made its way into the Coronado National Forest is still burning.

The U.S. Forest Service said the Triple 2 Fire started the afternoon of May 10 in Mexico. It’s now in the Nogales Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest, along the Mexican border between Walker Canyon and Forest Road 222, just 7 miles west of Nogales, Arizona.

The fire is believed to human-caused and has burned several acres across the U.S. Forest Service lands and 600 acres in Mexico.

There is zero containment of the 2-3 acres burning on the American side, but it is unknown what the containment number is in Mexico. Crews in Mexico are working to suppress the fire, and there was much less smoke seen rising in the air.

The vegetation burning is oak grassland and brush, and there is a moderate chance the fire could burn more. Area winds could push the fire across the border in another area, but if Mexican crews are successful, the potential for spread could subside in one to two days.

No structures are currently threatened.
