The Arizona Diamondbacks renamed the portion of Fourth Street between Jackson and Jefferson streets Randy Johnson Way in honor of the legendary pitcher on Thursday.
“It is only fitting that the street outside of our home be named after our first Hall of Famer,” D-backs President and CEO Derrick Hall said in a press release. “[Johnson] created so many great memories for our fans and now, whenever they drive by or walk up to Chase Field, they’ll be reminded of the rich history that surrounds them.”
The team formally made the name change during a ceremony on Thursday that began at 5 p.m. ahead of the team’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
Johnson, along with some other D-backs executives, was in attendance. The ceremony was open to the public.

In addition to the street renaming, Johnson’s Cy Young-winning 2002 season with the D-backs was remembered via a poster handed out to fans during the Throwback Thursday event.
On certain days this season, the team will look back at the a playoff team and current players will don the popular purple shirt with a white vest worn by Johnson and other D-backs throughout the years.
