SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California Gov. Jerry Brown is facing a deadline to sign a roughly $92 billion state spending plan.
Democratic lawmakers are wrapping up work to satisfy the governor’s demand for deeper cuts to help fill a projected $15.7 billion deficit. Wednesday is the last day for the governor to sign the main bill.
The new state budget relies heavily on voters approving Brown’s initiative on the November ballot. It would raise the state sales tax and increase the income tax on people who earn the most.
If voters reject the tax, a series of automatic cuts would be triggered, including three weeks less of school for the next two years.
Democratic Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield, who chairs the Assembly Budget Committee, says the spending package moves the state to fiscal stability.
