LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A woman died Tuesday when a day care van crashed into a tree in Louisville, and more than a dozen children and the driver were taken to the hospital, authorities said.

Three of the 14 children sent for treatment were reported in critical condition along with the driver, officials said.

Police are investigating why the van went out of control before crashing head on into the tree shortly after 5 p.m. EDT, Louisville police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said.

Smiley identified the dead woman as a monitor riding in the van and said another woman driving the van was in critical condition.

Kosair Children’s Hospital chief nursing officer Cis Gruebbel said 14 children were brought there. In addition to three children in critical condition in intensive care, she ssaid, nine other children were stable and two were being released.

A few children suffered concussions, a few had broken bones and others had bumps and bruises, Gruebbel said. One of the children was about 5 months old with the others ranging up to about 8 or 9 years, she said, although she didn’t have exact ages.

All of the children had family members who had arrived at the hospital to be with them, she said.

Smiley said some of the children had to be extricated from the van. Police information from the day care was that 13 children were in the van, Smiley said.

Neither the name of the day care nor the children’s names were released.

Officers had closed the parkway where the crash occurred for a time while they investigated.
