May Auto Sales: Toyota sales rise 87 percent

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) – Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. said Friday that U.S. sales rose 87 percent in May led by its Camry cars and the Prius line of hybrids. The Toyota lineup continued to grow faster than the upscale Lexus brand.
BY THE NUMBERS: Toyota sold 202,973 cars and trucks last month, compared with 108,387 in May 2011. Adjusted for two more selling days last month, the company said the average daily selling rate rose 73 percent.
TOP SELLERS: The company said sales of the Toyota Camry and Camry hybrid increased 94 percent to 39,571 from 18,830 a year earlier. The smaller Corolla car was next, at 31,847 sold.
HOT MODEL: Prius sales soared almost tripled to 21,477 cars from 6,924 a year ago.
