The nerd flags are flying high Wednesday — it’s May 4, or as “Star Wars” fans know, May the Fourth Be With You Day.

People still went to work, but honestly, all around the world there’s been a holiday-like atmosphere for lovers of all things Star Wars. There is nowhere more obvious of this sentiment than Twitter.

Comedy Central asked for song parodies and got some good ones:

Places of learning were not immune to the pull:

And lest you think the joy was all from grown-ups, this kid for the win:

Even those trapped in offices showed their allegiance to the franchise:

Like any hero or villain, May the Fourth comes with an origin story.

One of the earliest known references to the day came after the May 4, 1979, election of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, according to a post on the official Star Wars website.

Thatcher’s party took out an ad in the London Evening News with the message, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie.
Congratulations” the website said, adding that the day took off once the internet began connecting fans.

That was one pretty good.

Finally, in timing that was nearly as disastrous as Luke hanging around in the snow on Hoth:

That was posted hours before Kasich called a work stoppage of his GOP presidential bid.
