SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – Vermont Air National Guard officers say a series of staff reductions announced by the Air Force means the state’s Air National Guard will be ending a full-time mission based at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
Brigadier Gen. Steve Cray says that while 57 airmen and women will be losing their full-time jobs, they will still be part-time members of the National Guard.
And Cray says the changes announced Tuesday by the Air Force will increase the number of active duty Air Force personnel in South Burlington by 52.
For years the Vermonters in Virginia have been on an “alert” mission in which pilots and their planes are ready to respond within minutes to any air threat to the United States.
