DALLAS (AP) – Urging Congress to support to a federal breast cancer program, Susan G. Komen for the Cure officials refer to “mistakes” their organization made.
The letter from Komen founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker and president Elizabeth Thompson comes about two months after news of the group’s decision to stop giving money to Planned Parenthood for breast-screening led to criticism. The decision was later reversed, and an apology issued.
The letter sent this week to Congress says, “we made mistakes that ultimately raised questions in the community about our commitment to the mission of saving lives.” The Komen officials say they “extend our deepest apologies.”
They tell Congress they “cannot eradicate this disease without partners like you.”
A Komen spokeswoman said Friday they regularly urge Congress’ support for such federal programs.
