Miami Herald announces plan to move from downtown

MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Herald will be moving from its downtown Miami location to the former headquarters of the U.S. Southern Command in nearby Doral.

The Herald ( announced plans Thursday to move into the new location in May 2013. The Miami Herald Media Company says it also will begin building a printing plant on the property next door in April.

The newspaper’s parent company _ McClatchy Co. _ sold the 13.9-acre Herald property to the Genting Group for $236 million last year. Genting has announced plans to build a $3.8 billion destination resort with a casino at the site. The newspaper will remain in the downtown location rent-free until 2013.

The U.S. Southern Command moved into a new facility in Doral in 2010.
