According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, drowning is the leading cause of death in Arizona among children 1 to 4 years old.
According to www.preventdrownings.org there were 14 drowning fatalities, 8 adults and 6 children, in the Phoenix Valley in 2017.
Some 30 children and 23 adults were involved in near-drowning incidents during the same time period.
In the first three months of 2018, 3 children and 3 adults have died from drowning and there has been a total of 8 water emergencies so far this year.
