Job search 2.0: Some old resume rules don't apply

PHOENIX - Times are ever changing. The tactics that worked like a charm to get you a job a decade ago, won't necessarily work in today's job market. With the dismal unemployment numbers, you need to keep your job-finding skills sharp.

Michael Hayes with Momentum Specialized Staffing says forget about the unwritten rules which included things like keeping your resume to a single page document and to always include an objective. "In today's job search, mainly because you can't write a job description or objective that will cover a multitude of positions you are applying for," Hayes said.

There was a time when using a cell phone for an interview was a no-no. Not anymore. For thousands of Americans, today, landlines are non-existent in homes. However, employment experts say it is very important to find a place with good reception and no distractions.

He said don't do like a couple of people did when he reached them on their phones while they were driving. "Kids are screaming in the back of the car. That's not a good way to make an impression. Plus you can't make any notes when you're distracted."

Remember to forget the line at the bottom the page that read, 'references available upon request.' This is a convention from another time.

Hayes says other bits of advice that has gone by the wayside:

- Investing in good paper is a waste of cash since most employers expect you to submit resumes electronically.

- Being too formal in your writing

- Believe it or not, a follow-up call can actually come off as too pushy in this day and age.
