PHOENIX -- Defense attorneys in the trial of accused "Baseline Killer" Mark Goudeau have unexpectedly rested their case without calling any witnesses.
The move came Thursday, shortly after prosecutors rested their case, according to ABC15
Goudeau's defense team believes it has been able to create doubt through cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses.
Closing arguments are now scheduled for Oct. 17.
Goudeau faces 74 felonies in connection with a string of crimes including nine murders dating back to 2005.
Goudeau maintains police have the wrong man. Prosecutors in court have called Goudeau a "wolf in sheep's clothing." The trial began in June and had been expected to wrap up in January.
If convicted, Goudeau faces the death penalty. The 47-year old has already been convicted for sexually assaulting two sisters in a south Phoenix park and sentenced to more than 400 years.
