Transgender Woman Files Complaint against Scottsdale Club

Michele DelaFreniere, a transgender woman, is furious she was told to leave Anderson's Fifth Estate in Scottsdale and has filed a sex discrimination complaint with the Maricopa County Attorney General's Office.

"I just want to resolve it so we can get back in. That's all I care about. We have a right to be there," said DelaFreniere. "You know, if he told me not to come in there, I can understand it, me alone. But when he says a group of people - that's as bad as a white guy telling a group of black people or Hispanic people that are coming in to dinner or dance or whatever that they can't come in."

DelaFreniere said she felt safe at this club and encouraged a group of her friends to come along.

DelaFreniere accuses the owner of the club, Tom Anderson, of trampling the rights of a group of men in various stages of change when he banned them from the joint.

"Bigotry is bigotry no matter where you go," said DelaFreniere. "I'm not going to allow him to hide behind the fact that he's a businessman to be a bigot. That is wrong. That's not what this country is based on. That is what he is doing to me."

Anderson said dancing was one thing, but when it came to the ladies' room, that was a different story.

"It got out of control. They were using the women's restroom. My girls were upset about it. They went in, stood up and urinated. Then they would hang out, put make-up on and chat like they were one of the girls."

"They looked like men and if they're in the women's room - and they sound like men, they look like men - I'm really sorry they're in this predicament in their life."

Anderson said they've told him they've gone to the Arizona Attorney General's Office and hope to charge him with discrimination.

The AG's office is investigating and a hearing is set for August 7.
