Phantom Phoodie: J & G Steakhouse

Just a few days ago I was in the company of a Super Star. Not a recording artist or a film actor or a millionaire athlete. Those are all careers where you're only as good as your last performance. But this luminary gets to perform every night several times in fact.

We were guests at the J & G Steakhouse atop the Phoenician Resort and both the J and the G are the initials of the architect and creative visionary, restaurateur and award winning Chef Jean-George Vongerichten. His name is attached to restaurants in New York, Chicago, London, Hong Kong and, the whole reason I'm writing this, Phoenix…or for absolute accuracy Scottsdale.

Jean-George has to be credited with single-handedly putting a tired old lady out of her misery. Mary Elaine's was the fine- dining pride and joy of Charlie Keating, the creator and developer of The Phoenician. He named the room for his wife who actually aged far better than the establishment.

For years, if Phoenix diners wanted to be overcharged and overwhelmed with outdated pretentiousness all while adhering to a strict customer dress code, they attended. Finally, it became clear, that a complete change had to take place and Jean-George made it by sending everything at Mary Elaine's to a retirement home and creating a brand new fresh and open concept that reflects a more casual look for world-class dining.

And yes, world class is a phrase that can be translated as "pricey enough that most will make this a destination for special events". If you start with a lettuce wedge salad you'll pay $11.00, but it will be perfect. A crab cake appetizer is $18.00, but will be probably the best you've ever had. J & G is a Steakhouse and they'll offer you a choice of cuts that range from $28.00 - $60.00 and you'll find yours memorable…but don't be afraid to order the J & G Burger. Yes, it's $16.00, but it's so delicious you'll want to slap Jack right out of his Box.

So save up and the next anniversary or birthday or winning Lotto ticket, J & G is a great way to celebrate. And, just in case you feel that people like Jean-George live in a different world from you and me, I asked him if, having visited the major cities of the world what, if any, was the most unforgettable meal he has had in Phoenix. He told me it was the night before, when he had been completely blown away by Chris Bianco's Pizza downtown, across from the ball park. Way to go, JG!

I agree that there are many restaurants in this town...for evey budget and taste. If the restaurant provides great & memorable food, ambiance, wine list and service why shouldn't you pay for that type of experience. Dollars alone should not be the only barometer to judge an establishment. J & G is well worth the visit for the food and the view(and in memorium so was Mary Elaine's). I believe the Phoenix "foodies" like to patronize unique restaurants that encompass all aspects of a great dining experience. The only one that currently comes to mind is Lon's at The Hermosa...bon apetit!

Everytime I've been to J&G, I've had nothing less than an incredible experience. How about you've probably never been there my2cents... The steaks are great sized portions and cooked to perfection, and their cocktails are spot on perfect. Not to mention the view is incredible. Sure you could get a $10 steak at Applebees but it sounds like you'd be equally satisfied with a $1 frozen tv dinner with a hearty "steak" inside... J&G may be a little more cash, but you get what you pay for.
  • This is a great article....

If you're stupid enough to pay 11 bucks for a lettuce wedge, 18 bucks for crabcake appetizers and then even more for a steak the size of silver dollar. It's probably expensive because of the "presentation"...you know, where someone drapes a piece of asparagus over the meat. Stupid atricle in these economic times. Dude, nobody thinks you're high class, they think you're a complete tard.
