YUMA, Ariz. - Authorities say a 22-year-old man accused of posing as a student at two Yuma high schools has been charged with three counts of forgery and 11 counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

During his arraignment Monday in Yuma Justice Court, bail for Anthony M. Avalos was ordered to remain at $110,865.

Avalos, who actually graduated from a Crestview (Fla.) High School in 2005, was arrested Nov. 5 by Yuma police for fraudulently attending Kofa High School and Vista Alternative School intermittently since September 2008.

Police say Avalos admitted he created a fake birth certificate using a word processing program on his laptop computer to enroll in the schools. He also admitted to having sex several times with a girl he knew was under age 18.

When asked by police why he was posing as a high school student, Avalos said he wanted to play basketball in hopes of getting a college scholarship.

Sure wish he would have used his ability to plan a little better. Pick a small area, create a new persona, fake your credentials...etc. FL offers a lot of scholarships and they have an excellent Community College system. As does AZ. He ain't exactly a young kid, right out of High School, desperate for a chance at more education. If he wanted MORE, should have joined the Military. His story sounds good enough to garner a lot of sympathy, but I doubt if his motivations are as pure as he pretends.

Here's a young man that actually wants to attend college but lacked the money, I would guess, to do so. He went about this the wrong way but it seems to me a JC would allow him to play if his skills were good enough. As for the relationship with the minor, that will undoubtedly take any of his support away. Maybe out of all this, based on his academic standing from his original graduation, a small school, somewhere, will offer him a chance to play while he earns a degree. Good luck but the odds are stacked against you. P.S., I'm an educator.
