Snakebites: Gonzo visits D-backs

by Adam Green/Sports 620 KTAR (July 24th, 2009 @ 3:41pm)

PHOENIX - Former Diamondback great and fan favorite Luis Gonzalez returned to Chase Field Friday.

Gonzalez, who most recently played with the Marlins last season, said he was just visiting.

Gonzo spoke with Manager A.J. Hinch as well as members of the team's front office.

Montero improving behind the plate

While Miguel Montero's bat has justifiably earned a lot of attention, his play behind the plate has not gone unnoticed.

Hinch said Montero has improved significantly defensively.

"He's not a one-sided player, he's not strictly an offensive guy," Hinch said. "He's certainly far from a defensive liability.

"In fact, he's a defensive asset for us."

Montero's emergence has raised questions about what the team will do at the catcher position when Chris Snyder returns from his rehab assignment with triple-A Reno.

Snyder is expected to catch at least 7 innings Friday night, and then three of the next four games for the Aces.

dbacks had Tony Clark. A 'for sure' good guy. Never had any 'roids' allegations. ALWAYS good in the field and a genuine ball player. Now they want Gonzo? Please, NO. Very suspect at the dish, and in no way has Gonzo been dependable in the field. He is an over-the-hill, never was- never will be. Thought the fans wanted to win. Now they want 'leadership'? give me a break. If the dbacks want to make a splash signing, go get a quality player, write off this season, bring up the new talent, tell the fans they are planing on the next year or two and move on.

Sign him as a manager, he couldn't be worse than what we have now. He could be signed as an additional coach or extra outfielder. His veteran presence in the clubhouse might be a shot in the arm for many of the young players.
