Advocates protest $25M child care cut

Hundreds of child care advocates were at the state capitol Thursday, urging Arizona lawmakers to re-think their decision to cut over $25 million dollars for child care from the state budget.

Bruce Liggett with the Arizona Child Care Association said the cut can be avoided.

"The federal stimulus package that was signed by the president on Tuesday has $50 million dollars for child care, specifically, through the existing funding stream with the federal funds that the state already gets, so, there's $50 million new. We can prevent this cut from happening," he said.

If things don't change, Liggett added, over 8,000 low-income working parents in Arizona will start losing their child care assistance beginning March 1.
