A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition at a local hospital after his mother's boyfriend punched him, Phoenix police said.

Rosario Fierro-Lopez and the boy's mother brought the unconscious toddler to the emergency room early Thursday morning, police said.

Fernando Fuentes-Temaj's intestines were ruptured, which could only be caused by blunt force trauma, police said.

Officers said Fernando also had a broken arm, numerous bruises, scratches on his back and severe burns and blisters on his hands.

Fierro-Lopez, who is in the country illegally, told police he punched the boy in the stomach with a closed fist twice because Fernando would not stop crying, police said.
