A 46-year-old Mesa man is accused of helping O.J. Simpson break into a Las Vegas hotel room.
A light is on in the home (pictured below) but nobody is answering the door of the home of Walter Alexander.
Lt. Clint Nichols of Las Vegas Metro Police says Alexander was released on his own recognizance.
He's accused of being one of the people with a gun during the alleged robbery. Alexander is one of Simpson's golfing buddies.
"All we know about Mr. Alexander is that we received a tip, as the captain mentioned. We went out and met with him at the airport. The information was validated that he gave us. He is from Mesa, Arizona and I believe he went back to Mesa, Arizona."
Las Vegas authorities have charged Alexander with 6 counts, including assault with deadly weapon. Now he's hired a famous lawyer.
Robert Rentzer is best known for defending Rodney King. We asked him if Walter Alexander is guilty.
"That's the most bizarre question I've been asked," Rentzer said. "I've never had someone ask is your client guilty. This is America isn't it?"
So, is he innocent?
"In America, everyone is innocent until they're proven guilty," Rentzer said.
But has his client said he's not guilty?
"I'm not going to tell you that my client does or does not have a stated position," Rentzer said.
Has he determined if his client will cooperate with prosecutors?
"No, I have not," Rentzer said.
Alexander's neighbors told CBS 5 they were taken by surprise. "It took me a while to just sit there and go 'Oh my gosh.' You just never know what's next door," says one neighbor.
Another said he was speechless.
A man who answered the phone last night at Alexander's home says Alexander is in Los Angeles to see his attorney, and will speak to the press afterward. Whether that statement will be made in Mesa or Los Angeles is unclear.
Alexander faces various charges related to armed robbery.
