Employer Sanctions for Hiring Illegals Stuck in Senate

A plan to penalize employers who hire illegals remains bogged down in the state senate.

Republican Majority Leader John Huppenthal wants Governor Janet Napolitano to join the negotiations.

"We need to know that the governor's going to engage this and understand that we might have an imperfect product and that she'll sign it and then we'll move on. What's not acceptable is that she not engage," Huppenthal said.

Senate Republicans remain deeply divided over employer sanctions.

Democrat Jorge Luis Garcia said he'll support a plan, but only if it's fair.

"If we're going to sock it to the immigrant, at least we ought to sock it to the businessmen and that's the fairness that I'm talking about," Garcia said.

Republicans have made employer sanctions a centerpiece of their agenda for the year.
