Giffords Tries to Stop Sale of Surplus F-14 Parts
by Associated Press (March 8th, 2007 @ 3:45pm)
Freshman Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is introducing a bill to prohibit the Pentagon from selling surplus parts for the F-14 fighter jet to Iran.
The Arizona Democrat calls her bill a ``commonsense piece of legislation.''
Giffords says she doesn't believe most Americans are aware of the fact that the Iranians do have a fleet of F-14s and that the U-S sold to the Iranians.
Giffords says she hopes the legislation is just one step in what will be many aimed at better control over equipment and to make sure the U-S isn't helping militarize the Iranians.
Giffords' Tucson-based district includes one of the military's biggest retirement homes for aircraft.
