College students save by renting books

by Bob McClay/KTAR (January 19th, 2010 @ 5:12pm)

TEMPE, Ariz. -- As the spring semester gets underway at Arizona State University, students are being reminded they can rent textbooks at the same store that sells them.

The rental fee is half the sales price, said Anne Dziadura with "The College Store."

"So if it's a $100 book, you rent it for 50 bucks," Dziadura said. "At the end of the semester, you bring it back. There's a date that you have to bring it back by."

If students don't return the book by the deadline, they will be charged the full prize, Dziadura said.

Demand has been strong, said Dziadura.

"The majority of everybody is like, `Oh, wow, it's a lot less, so I'm going to rent,'" she said.

One of the renters is Amber Cobbs, a student at Phoenix College.

"It looks like I will be saving about $30 or $40 per book by renting," Cobbs said.

To rent at the online "The College Store," you must have a credit card and an e-mail address.

Before you pay $50 for a book that you have to return try Amazon.com. You purchase texts books used for alot less then that and do not have to worry about return dates or fees. You can get your textbooks in paperback (used) for less then hardcover (used) as well. I just purchased Organizational Behavior 13th edition(used paperback) for $28 bucks. Used hardcover would have been upwards of $80 and new was over $100. So check it out! Make sure though that the seller provides you with a confirmation and does not send it media mail.
