PHOENIX --Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard has formally created a committee to explore entering the race for governor, a contest in which he's already regarded as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Goddard's move Friday comes one day after Republican Gov. Jan Brewer announced she will run in 2010 for a full term as governor.

Goddard said in a statement he is deeply concerned about the state's future and believes the state must "have new leadership and a new direction."

He previously said he intended to run for governor, but Arizona's resign-to-run law bars a formal declaration of candidacy for another office before January when the last year of his current term begins.

The former Phoenix mayor was elected attorney general in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

willing to waste time and money chasing rainbows(the other being Brewer). Trouble is, they'll spend time on this instead of focusing on their current responsibilities. Most of which they have ignored anyway...
  • I heard Sheriff Joe was thinking of running?

I love Terry Goddard. Well, I disagree with about 65% of what he stands for but the guy is honest, he means what he says and he never runs from a fight. He did some very Republican things as mayor, even though he never wanted to, and it is really responsible for Phoenix's growth. I promise you, you won't hear him say he's going to raise taxes. Hats off to him. I am excited about hearing his plans to get us out of this mess!
