Gov. Ed Rendell has apologized for his comment that the Arizona governor is a good choice for Homeland Security secretary because she ``has no family.''
The remarks were picked up by an open microphone Tuesday at a meeting of the National Governors Association in Philadelphia. Some construed them as sexist.
Rendell said Napolitano is ``perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it.''
Napolitano has never been married and has no children.
Rendell apologized Wednesday, saying he ``didn't mean it the wrong way.'' But he reiterated that ``to do that job, you have to be ready to work 24-7.''
A spokeswoman for the Arizona governor says Napolitano considers Rendell a good friend.
