A Valley family that lost their home when Gilbert firefighters refused to douse the flames is getting a check with their name on it.

Alison Cooper with Rural Metro Corporation says the money is coming from its Queen Creek firefighters' fund.

"The Queen Creek firefighters have looked into their account to see what they can end up providing to the Leckington family, and this afternoon they'll be presenting [Brad] Leckington with a check for $1,400," said Cooper.

"We haven't had any tragedies such as this in a while, so they decided to go ahead and make the donation to Mr. Leckington and his family." The family is also getting a complimentary membership to Direct Buy in Scottsdale.

The Gilbert Fire Department has said it did not step in because the fire was out of its jurisdiction. Rural Metro eventually showed up but it was too late.

As far as the $10,000 bill for the response, Cooper says the Leckington's wouldn't get the bill because they were leasing the property. It's unknown whether Rural Metro management has decided to bill the property owner.

"The situation appears that Mr. Leckington was a lessee on this piece of property. He never would have received a bill," Cooper said.
