A man was killed when he drove his car off the South Rim of the Grand Canyon Monday, authorities said.

Park rangers received multiple calls about 6 a.m. that a car had gone over the edge of the canyon near the El Tovar Hotel.

Upon arriving at the scene, investigators found tire tracks leading to the edge behind the Thunderbird Lodge. Rescue personnel descended on ropes and found the vehicle about 600 feet below the rim. The body of a man was found nearby.

The man was alone in the car, police said.

The National Park Service is investigating.
