The Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality has dominated the headlines since its announcement, but has been a hot topic in the McCain household for some time now.
“I hate to get into a debate with my daughter,” Sen. John McCain told Mac and Gaydos on 92.3 KTAR on Monday. “Obviously she and I have had numerous discussions on this issue, we have agreed to disagree.”
Meghan McCain, blogger, GLAAD board member and daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) has been fighting for marriage equality since 2008.
“Everyone has to get in line, this is the America we’re living in,” Meghan McCain told Mac and Gaydos on 92.3 KTAR last week. “I don’t think we want to live in a time where we can regulate who can and can’t love someone and who can and can’t have different rights than another citizen.”
Regardless of his daughter’s public opinions and the SCOTUS ruling, Sen. McCain still believes that the institution of marriage is between one man and one woman.
Now that the Supreme Court has rendered this decision, Sen. McCain understands it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible to overturn because it is now part of the Constitution and requires the process of the Constitutional Amendment.
“I would like to focus my efforts right now on people’s right to practice their religious beliefs,” said Sen. McCain. “And people should be entitled to their beliefs and even if they are in disagreement on this whole issue, if someone wants to practice their religious principles and that entails the belief that marriage is between one man and one woman then those religious beliefs should be respected and that’s where I think people, like me, should put a lot of our efforts.”
