Although the modeling industry is known for setting impeccably high standards for its models, it is known to be one of the most highly coveted businesses today.

CR Fashion Book, a fashion magazine that has featured plus-sized model Candice Huffine and then-little known Kate Upton, is redefining the standard definition of “beautiful” with several different covers of its sixth issue, Yahoo Style reported.

Kitty Hayes, a 17-year-old Ford Model, is featured on the one of Carine Roitfeld’s three magazine covers — wearing braces.

“Carine teased me by telling me that she had a surprise for me,” Hayes said in an interview with CR Fashion Book. “She told everyone else in the room that I was the cover girl, but she said it in French so that I didn’t understand! She then took me into the studio and told me. I was so shocked that I could hardly speak.”

Roitfeld is not the first fashion icon to turn the industry on its heels.

Designer Carrie Hammer featured actress Jamie Brewer in her “Role Models Not Runway Models” show, making Brewer the first Down syndrome model to walk during New York Fashion Week.

“In fashion, it’s always better to be an interesting person than a beautiful one,” Roitfield said in a CR Fashion Book article. “Character is much more fascinating than pure good looks. This idea is what inspired me to dedicate an issue to jolie laide, a term made famous in Serge Gainsbourg song of the same name, which translates to ‘pretty ugly.’ From casting to makeup to clothing, this is what drives fashion at its core: The vague line between temptation and repulsion.”
